Multi-purpose Training
Range
Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania
USACE
HSW was selected to provide a complete design package for this $15
million multi-purpose training range (MPTR) for the Pennsylvania
National Guard. The purpose of the project is to provide a two-lane
range for M1 tanks and Bradley Fighting vehicles to support the
armored vehicle familiarization and qualification requirements.
The site is in mountainous terrain and will require extensive grading
and drainage work. Primary features of the range include two course
roads, thirty stationary armor targets (SAT), four moving armor
targets (MAT), sixty-four stationary infantry targets (SIT), eight
defilade positions, and sixteen bore sight lifters. The design package
includes multi-disciplined tasks to prepare construction drawings,
specifications, design analysis, cost estimates, special contract
clauses, and project information documentation using a combination
of Pennsylvania National Guard and Huntsville range design standards,
modified to account for the difficult terrain.
The scope included converting existing LIDAR survey data into 3-D
metric contours, geotechnical studies, 65%, 95%, and 100% design
submittals, review meetings, comment consolidation and response
using DrChecks, and engineering services during construction. Civil/site
work, electrical power, fiber optic data cable, and support facilities
represented the most significant design elements. Of special concern
on this range was line-of-sight calculations to assure targets could
be seem from each firing position along the tank trail at 15 meter
intervals. The project includes the standard two tier defilade positions
to be located directly adjacent to the tank trails.
