Fairbanks FDOT Project
HSW was selected for this unique, performance-based, remediation project for the FDOT. HSW has taken over all environmental tasks at this site; including strategic planning and financial negotiations, assessment, remediation, and current system O&M. The performance-based contract establishes a fixed fund for reaching target cleanup levels in multiple aquifers, with shared savings between HSW and FDOT when the work is successfully completed for less than is funded.

The existing groundwater remediation system, designed and installed by others, consists of horizontal recovery trenches for capturing surficial aquifer groundwater and vertical recovery wells for capturing Intermediate Aquifer groundwater. The recovered groundwater is routed to one of five treatment buildings with air stripping towers. The treated water is routed to one of three onsite percolation ponds. An irrigation system is used to manage water levels in one of the percolation ponds to eliminate the need for an NPDES permit.

HSW intends to accelerate cleanup while cutting costs by optimizing the existing treatment systems and by evaluating more effective, innovative technologies. To date, HSW has reduced significantly the labor required for the system O&M as well as reducing the number of recovery/treatment systems operating.
