Multipurpose Machine Gun (MPMG) Transition Range
Fort, Knox, Kentucky

The Louisville District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, utilizing our contract with the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville, tasked HSW with a project to modernize a Korean War-era machine gun range with inadequate capacity at Fort Knox, Kentucky. This project provides a new 10-lane Multipurpose Machine Gun Transition Range for support of the M2 Machine Gun and M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). This range has to support Initial Military Training (IMT), Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC), and many other Reserve and National Guard units.

Primary purpose of the task was to take design to a point sufficient to verify the original cost estimate in the DD 1391 and identify areas of design and construction that could impact cost. The HSW Team prepared a Project Definition (10%) design submittal which includes preliminary site design, design of the range operations center area and downrange targetry, single-line floor plans and building elevations, utilities information, and estimating of construction costs using the M-CACES software. The goal was to define a workable footprint for an accurate cost estimate to validate that the entire scope of the project can be constructed for the authorized cost. Verification of extensive earthmoving as a primary cost of the project was accomplished.
